Ukrainian forces are “fully” prepared for war according to Russia’s spy chief, who warned that the “existence of mankind” could be at stake if fighting begins.

For weeks, it was reported that more than 100,000 Russian forces were based on the border between the two countries, as Vladimir Putin grew fearful of ordering an invasion.

But Sergei Naryshkin, head of SVR foreign intelligence and a close ally of the Russian president, says Ukraine’s preparations for the battle are in full swing.

He also accused the West of stoking the fires of war after transporting arms and ammunition from the UK, US and Canada.

Naryshkin, head of the SVR since 2016, said: “Preparations are in full swing, they cannot be hidden.

“All combat-ready units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are concentrated on the border with Donbass.”

“There is a massive transfer of hundreds of tons of military equipment and ammunition from US bases in Europe, from Britain and Canada.

“The contingent of NATO special forces advisers and instructors is being increased.”

“Unfortunately, the Western world has not yet realized how much the danger of growing mistrust between countries – and the collapse of the foundations of mutual security between countries – threatens the existence of humanity.

“There are even reports of the emergence of multinational units of jihadist militants.”

Mr Naryshkin described reports of possible Russian hostility as a “blatant lie”.

He added: “This blatant lie, and a very dangerous lie, began to spread across the Atlantic, and this lie was picked up in a number of Western capitals.

“The main threat to Ukraine is the Ukrainian internal armed conflict between the regime in Kiev and the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk.”

Russia’s counter-intelligence agency, the FSB, has also arrested dozens of youths for what it says is a Ukrainian conspiracy over hundreds of recent bomb threats targeting schools and colleges in Russia.

Russian state broadcaster Rossiya 1 and NTV, owned by Gazprom-Media, echoed Naryshkin, saying Ukraine was preparing for hostilities and stockpiling offensive weapons.

Rossiya 1 alleged that Ukrainian forces had “deployed multiple rocket launcher systems near the line of contact” and artillery in Donbass.

Russian state media later attacked Truss, indicating Moscow’s irritation at his intransigent warnings about military build-up of the Kremlin and threats of sanctions should he invade.

Igor Korochenko, a pro-Kremlin military commentator, told Rossiya 1: “If you show up for serious negotiations, with serious people like the Russian foreign minister, the patriarch of international diplomacy, you have to be, at the less from an intellectual point of view, a little more on the same level as Lavrov. We haven’t seen it.

Other media dubbed her “tankistka”, a tank driver, after her recent photoshoot in Estonia in a British tank.

Pro-Kremlin TV presenter Vladimir Soloviev asked, “Why did this lady from the UK come? To take it [fur] hat for a walk?
