Sheriff’s Office – NBC Bay Area

According to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement officers shot and killed a gunman in Discovery Bay late Tuesday night while responding to a domestic situation.

The shooting happened in a residential area, where sheriff’s officials said the deputies were dealing with a domestic situation when “a subject with a weapon came their way, forcing the deputies to unload their guns at fire,” according to a tweet from the sheriff’s office.

The man was injured by the gunfire and taken to hospital, where he later died, officials said.

The sheriff’s office released a photo of the gun the man pointed at deputies, and it appears to be an assault rifle.

A neighbor said he heard the situation changing quickly.

“What we heard was get off the sidewalk, get off the sidewalk, put your gun down, put your gun down,” neighbor Patrick Gormley said. “And just to me it felt like five to nine shots, bam, bam, bam real quick, then more sheriffs came, everyone showed up, then all the neighbors, as you can see , we all ran away.”

The exact location of the shooting was not immediately released.

Oakley police were also involved in the shooting, sheriff’s officials said.

No MPs or officers were injured.
