Police in standoff with gunman at Redruth home

Police negotiators were called to a Cornwall property in a confrontation with a man wielding a knife who had barricaded himself inside.

Devon and Cornwall Police were called to a property in the Grenville Gardens area of ​​Troon, near Camborne, last night (January 24) following reports of a domestic incident and concerns about the well-being of people on the property.

It was later reported that another man left the area on foot and was later found at a property in Forth Scol, Redruth after barricading himself inside with a knife.

Although no armed units were deployed to the scene, officers cordoned off the area and a number of police units witnessed the incident for several hours, along with police negotiators to encourage a peaceful resolution.

A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, also said police dogs were there, telling CornwallLive: “One guy locked himself inside his house and was sitting at the upstairs window. From from time to time he would shout threats and demands at the officers and swing around a knife, signaling that he would hurt himself or an officer.”

They added that the threats were serious enough that police decided to distance themselves from the man and that at one point he even threw something at an officer.

The witness explained: “It was hard to hear the threats but they were enough to make the police move away from him when he came out of the house to yell at them. [At one point] he threw something at an officer.”

A man in his 30s has been confirmed to have been taken into custody on suspicion of assault and is awaiting questioning.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: “Police attended a property in the Grenville Gardens area of ​​Troon, near Camborne yesterday afternoon (January 24) in connection with a domestic incident and following concerns for the well-being of people inside the property.

“A man was initially arrested on suspicion of breaching the peace, but has since been arrested.

“Another man left the area on foot and was located at an address in Forth Scol after barricading himself in the property and refusing to leave and was in possession of a knife.

“A number of police units attended the scene, including police negotiators, working to bring this matter to a peaceful conclusion.

“At around 8pm, and after working with police negotiators, the man voluntarily left the property. He was taken to hospital for treatment for superficial injuries to his hand.

“A man in his 30s has been taken into custody on suspicion of assault and awaits questioning.”
