PHOENIX – Phoenix police have identified a man who officers shot dead after taking a gun.
Authorities said Dedrick Garcia, 37, was the suspect who died Saturday while locked in a car.
The incident began around 4:40 a.m. when an officer saw a driver in downtown Phoenix speeding and committing other traffic violations.
The officer saw the suspect’s car stop in the driveway of a house. Officers then approached the vehicle and saw Garcia lying in the back seat. They say he knocked on the car windows several times to talk to her but he didn’t answer.
The occupants of the house said they did not recognize the car and wanted it gone.
Police say officers then spotted a handgun inside the car. A tactical support unit was called, and officers tried for nearly an hour more to speak to Garcia.
Authorities say officers then broke a window. Garcia seized a gun and officers fired their guns and at least one pepper bullet.
Garcia was pronounced dead.
Police said both officers involved in the shooting had body cameras turned on.
Investigators are still collecting evidence from the shooting.
