An “armed” man was shot dead this afternoon in a dramatic confrontation with police in Kensington.
Met police said he walked into a bank and betting shop armed with a gun shortly after 3 p.m.
About 15 minutes later, armed officers stopped a vehicle at the intersection of Kensington Road and Palace Gate, near Hyde Park.
Shots were fired, with one witness telling MyLondon: “I was sitting having coffee when I heard people shouting ‘show me your hands, show me your hands’ and then them. two or three loud bangs.
“I don’t know how long after that, but they started compressing the man on the ground next to what appeared to be a cab.
“They continued to cut back as the police started recording the area saying it was a crime scene and everyone had to leave.”
The bank and betting shop entered by the “gunman” is near Marloes Road, where the police were called, about a mile from where the shooting took place.
The Met said it was unable to give more details on their specific location.
Police declined to say whether the shots were fired by officers or if anything was stolen from the bank or from a betting shop.
Paramedics and an air ambulance team were called to the scene, but the man could not be rescued and was pronounced dead at 4:08 p.m.
Police said the incident was reported to the IOPC and was not being treated as terrorism.
