Gunman threatens staff before fleeing in Ballincollig taxi

A gunman stormed a business and threatened staff before taking valuables and escaping in a taxi in Ballincollig.

The incident happened in Ballincollig on Saturday evening and a speedy gardai managed to make an arrest after a follow-up search hours later.

A man in his 30s is currently being held at the town’s Bridewell station and has since been charged to appear in court.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí in Togher have arrested a man following an armed robbery which occurred at business premises in Main Street, Ballincollig, Cork on the evening of Saturday 23 April 2022.

“At approximately 7.15pm last night a lone male entered the business premises in Main Street, Ballincollig armed with a weapon and threatened members of staff. He left the premises in a taxi with a number of items.

“During a follow-up search of the area, Gardaí arrested a man (late 30s) and ownership of the premises was located.

“He was taken to Bridewell Garda Station where he was held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984. He has since been charged in connection with the incident and is due to appear tomorrow morning Monday 25 April 2022 at Cork City Court, Court Number 1, at 10.30am”
