Gunman shot dead by Orlando officers after carjacking attempt – WFTV

ORLANDO, Fla. — Police remained at the scene of a shooting involving an officer near MetroWest in Orlando for nearly 2 hours Wednesday.

The incident took place shortly before 1 a.m. near Vista Verde Apartments along Hiawassee Road near Raleigh Street, the Orlando Police Department said.

At a news conference Wednesday, a department spokesperson said officers responded to the apartment complex after receiving multiple 911 calls from residents about a suspicious incident.

Callers reported a gunman knocking on windows in the resort and “acting erratically,” according to Deputy Chief Eric Smith.

Some residents also said they heard possible gunfire.

“We heard the gunshots and my daughter ran into the room,” neighbor Eric Anderson said. “So at the time I thought someone probably got shot.”

Officers arrived and spotted the man, identified as 35-year-old Steffan Haskins, in the Vista Verde parking lot.

Officers said Haskins ran, with a gun, toward a car with an innocent bystander and attempted to distract the passerby.

Police say the shooting happened when officers tried to apprehend Haskins.

Officers said Haskins is expected to survive, “thanks to the immediate first aid provided by officers whose life has just been threatened.”

Haskins is charged with carjacking with a firearm, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer with a firearm, and aggravated assault with a firearm.

OPD said neither the officers nor the bystander were injured in the shooting.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate the shooting and once its findings are completed, the Orlando Police Department said it will conduct its own investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, OPD said five officers involved in the shooting are on temporary paid administrative leave.
