Deputies shot a man who pulled out a gun as they confronted him inside a Walmart in Southern California, sheriff’s officials say.

the incident took place at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the Foothill Ranch store, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department reported in a news release.

Deputies responding to reports that people were trying to return products they hadn’t purchased from the store confronted the man, who was uncooperative, the statement said.

He pulled out a gun and deputies fired at him, the statement said. A knife and a firearm believed to belong to the man were recovered.

The man underwent surgery but no information was available on his condition, sheriff’s officials said.

A man and woman fled the store and drove away, but were later found and arrested, the statement said.

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the shooting.
