Gunman locks down schools in Fairfield

May 28 – FAIRFIELD – A report of a gunman near an elementary school prompted a brief lockdown on Friday.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office said police were notified at 12:40 p.m. Friday of a gunman on the grounds of Pence Elementary School in Fairfield. A lockdown has been ordered for all schools in Fairfield as well as the Enlightenment Maharishi School while officers investigate.

Officers from multiple jurisdictions began securing each school building as law enforcement searched for the man. No one matching the man’s description was located and lockdowns were lifted at 1.45pm and students were released from school.

Law enforcement continues to search for the man, and the district attorney’s office said a criminal investigation into the possible brandishing of a firearm on school property is ongoing.

Jefferson, Van Buren, Davis, Wapello, Henry, and Washington county sheriff’s offices assisted the Fairfield Police Department. Other entities that have assisted include the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Department of Iowa Transportation, Fairfield Fire Department, Care Ambulance and Jefferson County Emergency Management.
