Aauthorities have identified the man who taken several people taken hostage in a synagogue in Texas.

the FBI confirmed on Sunday that the hostage taker was Malik Faisal Akram, 44, a British citizen. Faisal, who investigators said was “singularly focused on a problem” that was “not specifically related to the Jewish community,” was pronounced dead at a Saturday night press conference, and all hostages were released.

No further information has been released by the FBI, and the Terrorism Task Force “will continue to pursue investigative leads.” according to to a press release from the federal agency.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the rescue after reporters at the scene claimed they heard a loud explosion. The hostages, who are all adults, “do not need medical attention”, according to statements at a press conference.

Faisal previously identified himself on a stream as being related to Aafia Siddiqui, who is serving an 86-year sentence for the attempted murder of a US soldier. However, Muhammad Siddiqui, the biological brother of Aafia Siddiqui, said he was not the man holding the worshipers hostage, her lawyer Recount the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

There is a online movement advocating for the release of Aafia Siddiqui, with supporters claiming his innocence. Supporters have also staged protests in the United States demanding his freedom, with CAIR planning an event support his release.

CAIR Deputy National Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell also issued a statement condemning the hostage-taking, saying no cause can “justify or excuse this crime”.

“We strongly condemn the hostage-taking at Congregation Beth Israel in Colleyville, Texas. This latest anti-Semitic attack on a place of worship is an unacceptable evil act. We stand in solidarity with the Jewish community and pray that the authorities in charge law enforcement are able to quickly and safely release the hostages,” Mitchell said.
