He loved serving customers

Mykel Gordon served Chick-fil-A customers for over a decade, and it was a job he loved. The kind-hearted father of two always had a smile on his face and never hesitated to go the extra mile.

Witness Molly Kelner captured part of the ordeal on camera and documented the graphic nature of the events. Most notable was Gordon’s unwavering pursuit of justice. He spared no energy and did not worry about his injuries.

In September 2022, Gordon went to work in the Fort Walton Beach, Florida area and started his shift as he would any other day. However, something unexpected was about to happen, and his quick thinking would make a significant difference.

He needed help

The employee was in the middle of an order when he heard loud screams coming from a woman standing nearby. She looked panicked as she held a baby in her arms. Unable to ignore his despair, he ran towards her. Gordon share:

“I hear a call from the other side of the store over there. I was like – I have to help somebody. I have to help (sic).”

The employee attacked a man

Gordon knew something was wrong and quickly saw the suspected culprit. By the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office (OSCO), a woman pulled her baby out of the car when a man approached her.

He brandished a stick and demanded that she hand over her car keys. As soon as Gordon realized what was happening, he bravely tackled the man to the ground.

The suspect, identified as William Branch, allegedly attempted to hijack the mother and her baby. Branch reportedly grabbed the woman’s keys from his belt and was making his worst nightmare a reality.

He knew what to do

Witness Molly Kelner captured part of the ordeal on camera and documented the graphic nature of the events. Most notable was Gordon’s unwavering pursuit of justice. He spared no energy and did not worry about his injuries.

Gordon rolled over the tarmac and apprehended the man impressively. He revealed where his security knowledge and defensive skills came from:

“My stepdad is in the military, and I grew up doing what he did. When it happened, I knew exactly what to do because of him. Thank God.”

The mother was vulnerable

Gordon received a severe blow to the chin, but his intervention drew the attention of other workers who rushed to the scene. Together, a group of people watched the suspect until police arrived.

An unnamed woman who watched the ordeal unfold was seen interacting with the suspect. She did not condone his actions and made her opinion known, shouting:

“She had a baby in her hands. How dare you ! How dare you scare him like that!

The victim was in a vulnerable position holding her baby…without Gordon, things could have turned out differently. Fortunately, his quick thinking led to the suspect’s arrest.

Many people thanked the selfless employee

The Chick-fil-A employee was presented as a hero, and rightly so! The OSCO honored Gordon and presented him with an award and coin for community service. They called him a “humble hero”, and Sheriff Eric Arden added:

“What we often say is service is in our DNA, it’s our mantra, it’s our motto. You clearly have service in your DNA from the work you do here, but you know that you have served and protected.”

Arden also told Gordon to call him if he was interested in joining the police force, as they might have an opening for him.

The Chick-fil-A store sang Gordon’s praises and noted their pride in having him on the team. Their publication online Lily:

“It’s the HERO! It’s Mykel Gordon! At Chick-fil-A, our mission is to ‘Serve’, and today Mykel went further…to ‘Save’.”

Gordon’s actions were selfless and courageous. In a world that favors the inner life, he gave back and put himself on the line for another. Kudos to him!
